Question by jim_007: Are push ups a good exercise to build the chest and shoulders?
I am a slim guy. I started doing push ups last week..can’t afford a gym membership. I want to get built, especially in the chest and shoulders area quickly..I am eating a lot and taking adequate rest.

Should push ups be enough to have a fit and well built upper body? i am doing two form of pushups – wide and normal pushups. 3 sets-5 reps each….3-4 days a week. How soon can I see results?

Yes push ups are the best chest, shoulder, and triceps exercise without weights. However, if you’re looking for a fully well built upper body, you’re gonna have to do something about your biceps and forearms (I recommend pull ups/chin ups), your abdominal’s (sit ups/crunches work) and your trapezius muscle [I recommend inverted push ups (put your body in a hand stand position against a wall and do push ups that way)] that way you completely build your upper body and you don’t start getting disproportionate. Also I recommend doing another form of push ups, the diamond push ups (put your thumbs and index fingers together during push ups which will help build your arms and shoulders). And lastly, it’s not about how much you’re eating, it’s about eating properly. It doesn’t matter how much you eat, if it’s the wrong stuff you won’t improve. You want to take in lots of protein, vitamins, and minerals to make the most of building muscle, giving you extra energy to take your workout further, and just staying in good shape in general. And finally, you’ll want to increase your repetitions every week or so. The faster you increase, the faster you get built. I don’t know how old you are, but you should be able to do 3 sets of 10 with relative ease.

Question by Munabi: What would cause pain in my chest when doing push ups?
I like to do push ups for exercise but lately when I flatten against the floor I get pain in my chest and it worries me slightly that I don’t know what the cause would be. It’s not a pain through my back or stomach but just in my chest and only in the point of the push ups when you’re supposed to resting against the ground.

You have several muscle groups activated during a standard push-up: triceps, shoulder muscles, and your chest muscles (there are some smaller muscles activated also, but it’s unimportant). Without a proper warm-up it’s possible that you damaged your pectoralis major or minor (Chest muscles) and you simply need to rest and let them heal.
The proper form for a push-up is to lower your body until you are about 3.5 inches off the ground or the size of your fist. Any lower and you are putting too much stress on your deltoids (Shoulder) and could cause the pain you are experiencing. I suspect it’s one of the two I just covered, as long as there is no swelling or bruising just take some time off and allow yourself to heal. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to email me.
