Firstly, one important tip to remember when doing any form of leg exercise is to not take your knees past a 90 degree angle. Once past this point the stresses on your knee joint and ligaments is multiplied considerably.
The simple method to perform a correct squat move is to think that you are just trying to sit back onto a chair. Have your feet shoulder width apart with your knees in line with your toes. Keep your head up, looking forward and lower yourself naturally until your knees are at 90 degrees. Stop at this point and stand back up.
Lunges should be done correctly by placing one leg directly out in front and the other behind at equal distances. You don’t move forward in the lunge movement but straight down, until your front knee is at 90 degrees. Your knee should also not go out in front of your foot. Back straight, head up looking forward. Alternate between each leg.
Lunges are an excellent exercise for toning and strengthening your legs and glutes (butt). You can also introduce hand weights or resistance bands into both of these exercises for added resistance.
Hope this helps.
