Perfect Multi-Gym vs Iron Gym, September 27, 2013

I spent hours reading reviews of chin-up bars, and was just about ready to buy the Iron Gym. Glad I did not. We discovered that a friend had an Iron Gym, and borrowed it to see if it fits our doors. The Iron Gym did not fit any of our doors. The reason is simple. The iron gym has no adjustments. Our walls are too thick for the Iron Gym.

The Perfect multi-gym can adjust vertically to accommodate moldings of different widths, and the depth can also be adjusted to fit walls of different thicknesses. We have thick walls and wide moldings. Our wall thickness including the molding thickness is 7.5″ (yes, you need to add the thickness of the moldings), and our molding is 4″ wide. By selecting the appropriate holes to slide the bolts through, you can adjust the “fit” for height of molding and depth of wall/molding.

Why four stars and not five? Two reasons. The first is that we only found a couple of doors that we want to use. If your doors are too wide, then the gym won’t fit. If your molding is next to the wall(ends at a wall), then the gym may not fit well either. We ended up using a bathroom door with width of 28″, which to us is about the perfect width. We tried it on doors with 32″ openings. Yes, it would work, but our moldings are very wide with multiple waves and depressions, and the end pieces would press against the door molding at angles, feeling less secure. By the way, we feel that the Iron Gym would fit far fewer variety of doors.

Also, we wish the quality of material is higher. What do you expect for $30? Well, Perfect Gym is about what I expect for $30. However, I wish there were a higher end version, with higher quality metal tubing, higher quality grip, etc. I would have paid $50 for better materials. The cross piece that hang above the door frame is somewhat flexible plastic. I wish it was more robust. I could not find anything with higher quality built, so the Perfect Multi-Gym is as good as possible for an over the door situation.

Update: It has been 8 months, the product has held up fine. Mind you, the foam grips over the tubing would probably not have lasted, if we did not wrap them with tapes.

Not bad but could be better, June 5, 2013

I purchased this product yesterday because for some odd reason all the gyms around here don’t have pull-up bars. I went with this pull-up bar because it seemed to have many good reviews. After examining the components, I started to become skeptical as much of it appeared cheaply made but I decided to give it a shot anyway. Sure enough, I was right to be suspicious because as I was using a ratchet to tighten the last nut on one of the crossbars, my kung-fu grip snapped the bolt in half.

After showing the bolt to a hardware store employee, he confirmed that it was a weak bolt. I decided to replace all of the nuts, bolts, and washers with slightly larger and stronger hardware. After some adjustments, the product fit well in the doorway without problems. I carefully attempted to hang from it and felt very uneasy about it. It didn’t feel sturdy at all, but since this the first pull-up bar I’ve ever purchased I will — cautiously — do more testing then update my review and give my final rating. However, as of right now, I’m still very skeptical.

    UPDATE:
Well after more testing, I have come to the conclusion that this bar is not that bad. Although I felt uncomfortable about it being able to support my weight of 186 lbs, it held up well and that includes both the standard bar and parallel bar. Although this product is rated up to 220 lbs, I would personally limit the weight recommendation only up to 200 lbs. That’s just my opinion.

In addition, so far I haven’t had any issues with paint peeling or door frame marring.

I’m giving this product a 3-star rating for two reasons:
    1) Even though it hasn’t caused any issues, I don’t feel as safe on it as I do on a sturdy pull-up bar in a park
    2) The original nuts and bolts were weak

Won’t damage the door frame, May 19, 2013

I originally had the “Iron Gym” pull up bar, and used that for a couple of years. I found myself having to re-touch the paint on the door frame far too frequently, therefore I set out to find something better.

I have now had the Perfect Multi-Gym for about 2 months and have been very happy with it thus far. It fits the door frame very well and due to the way the padding is designed, I haven’t found a single mark on the frame or painted area above the door. I would attribute this to the fact that the pads are made from a different material than most of the units I have seen and also uses a flat gray pad vs the more common rounded black foam material.

Well constructed, very sturdy, and just works!

You get what you pay for…, July 19, 2014

For the price, it seemed like a screaming deal. Most other pull-up bars that look like this are 2-4 times the price. When I bought it, there were no reviews so this must have been a relatively new item. It was one of the most popular pull-up bars according to Amazon. But you get what you pay for.

A little background: I used my Gold’s Gym regular pull-up bar from Wal-Mart prior to buying this. It was a simple design: one bar, no other extra handles. It held for many years and I could still use it now. I used it for P90X. I wanted to get one of these more elaborate bars with more hand positions because some other workouts required it.

The materials seem fine but the craftsmanship is utter garbage. Extra tools were needed (hammer, ratchet and 10mm socket) because the holes for the screws didn’t align right and the wrench they give you is pathetic. Instructions are vague and don’t differentiate the left and right parts. The diagram is super small too. Once assembled, it doesn’t seem to line-up correctly.

I don’t usually do reviews for Amazon, but this item really shouldn’t be sold anywhere. And it really isn’t sold anywhere other than Amazon. For the price, I don’t even feel like disassembling it and returning it. I’ll try it out for a little longer but if it gets scary, its going back.

I received this product the other day and wanted to do a review since there were not that many and a lot of negative reviews and wanted to chime in. The instructions, or lack there of, are bad and the picture is a bit small. I had to take a few parts out and flip them on 2 occasions. But the trick to this is you should never tighten any bolt until every bolt is installed. Once you have all bolts installed flip it over and tighten it like you would a car tire. Do one snug then go to the next then finally tighten it fully on the last pass.

I had no issues with any holes aligning when I did it this way. The instructions are basically just an diagram of the bar showing where the bolts go. Take note there are 2 bolts that are shorter than the other 8 those are for the flat part that goes against the wall. They will not work anywhere else. There are also 2 really short ones and they help hold the long 3 piece flat bar.

As for functionality this bar is great, I used it a few times and it does what it’s supposed to. I did notice very slight divots in my trim from where the bar pushes against but that’s because of the trim being that pressed wood material and not the fault of the bar since any bar would do the same.

All in all I’m very please with this purchase and well worth the little bit they want for it. I took a star off only because the instructions just plain suck.

Someone said that the grips in the picture are wrong but the pictures on the website look exactly like what I received.

Can’t believe the quality for the price. I put it together and it works great. Plenty strong. It does have some flexing because it comes as several pieces but it won’t break. At 185 lbs I am confident in its strength. Two things to note: the back piece that goes above the door jam is made of light plastic. It looks like it would be rubber or something heftier, I don’t think that it detracts from the value. The other thing is the bar that goes across the front of the door jam looks like it has a rubber bumper is just the foam grips. Again, I would think it should be stronger but it works for now.

If you are looking for a doorway pull up / chin up bar, this is it.
